Anna Hazare

Anna Hazare is one of India’s well-acclaimed social activists. A former soldier in the Indian army, Anna is well known and respected for upgrading the ecology and economy of the village of Ralegan Siddhi which is located in the drought prone Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra state. The erstwhile barren village has metamorphosed into a unique model of rural development due to its effective water conservation methods, which made the villagers self-sufficient. Earlier, the same village witnessed alcoholism, utter poverty and migration to urban slums. Inspired by Hazareji’s unique approach of salvaging a hopeless village, the state government has implemented the `Model Village? scheme as part of its official strategy. 

Hazare deservedly won the coveted Padma shri and then Padma Bhushan,  Care International of the USA, Transparency International, Seoul (South Korea) also felicitated him.

Anna Hazare Ji  is now synonymous with rural development in India.

Watershed Devlopment

Transformation of Ralegan Siddhi

Over the years Anna Hazare Ji transferred a drought hit village into heaven.

Prohibition of Alcohol

Sale & Consumption of Alcohol, Tobacco, cigarettes, Beedies is strictly prohibited in the village . Villagers burnt all alcoholic products in the “Holi” 22 Year’s ago.

Grain Bank

In 1980, Hazare started the Grain Bank at the temple, with the objective of providing food security to needy farmers during times of drought or crop failure.

Watershed Work

Hazare persuaded villagers to construct a Watershed  to stop water and allow it to percolate and increase the ground water level and improve irrigation in area.

Education For All

 Hazare, along with the youth of village, worked to increase literacy rates and education levels. In 1976 they started a pre-school and a high school in 1979.

Removal of Untouchability

Hazare’s moral leadership motivated and inspired the villagers to shun untouchability and caste discrimination.

Gram Sabha

Hazare campaigned between 1998 and 2006 for amending the Gram Sabha Act, so that villagers have a say in the village’s development.
